One Year of Play! By Sephora! Is It Worth It?

This marks my one year anniversary of being subscribed to the Play! By Sephora Box! And so far so good! I’ve tried a lot of great products I otherwise wouldn’t have. Like the Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara, the Dermablend setting powder and Verb Ghost Oil among others. I’ve even loved some products so much I purchased full sized ones: UD setting spray, MUFE matte primer, and Becca Backlit Filter.

But I will admit, the items I don’t use def outnumber the ones I do use. Mostly hair care, fragrances, and skincare. I’m fickle with all three of those. Some sample sizes are enough to really test it out, some aren’t. It’s def been a great ride this last year reviewing these boxes. I think I’ll stick with it, but I have been eying other ones, and I can NOT justify subscribing to more than one. So we’ll see...

  • Variety of items are sent
  • Tried out items that I’ve added to my routine

  • I rarely use everything or even most things in the boxes
  • Some samples aren’t big enough to try out more than once

Now let’s get into April’s Play! By Sephora Box!

1) Product: MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua XL Eye Pencil Waterproof Eyeliner

Description: Aqua XL Eye Pencil Waterproof Liner's superior, long-lasting formula will not smudge, crease, or fade until you remove it. Its innovative formula blends intense, rich color with a super-gliding texture.

My Take: I got purple one of these a few months back. I did like it, I just don’t use it much. I’m more of a liquid liner kinda gal. But it goes on smoothly and lasts a while.

2) Product: SEPHORA COLLECTION Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover

Description: This do-it-all formula removes waterproof makeup and contains a lash-strengthening complex that's rich in flavonoids and olive wood extracts.

My Take: I'm team micellar water. But this is fun to shake up. Yes. I am a child.

3) Product: Kate Somerville ExfoliKate® Intensive Exfoliating Treatment

Description: Kate’s bestselling exfoliator is formulated with face scrubbing natural exfoliants to deep clean clogged pores without over-drying skin. Lactic acid and fruit enzymes— papaya, pineapple, and pumpkin—reveal smooth skin and a brighter, healthier-looking complexion in as little as one use. This signature formula works both physically and enzymatically to deliver safe, dramatic results from the comfort of your home.

My Take: I’ve been looking for a chemical exfoliator to finally get rid of these dark marks. I admit... I’m a bit afraid of changing skincare. I break out easily. So maybe I’ll spot try it.

4) Product: Smashbox Iconic Photo Finish Foundation Primer

Description: A translucent primer gel that smooths skin and blurs flaws—for makeup that looks better and lasts longer on set.

My Take: It’s not a bad primer, but honestly I like the elf one better. This one is a tad bit thicker, but is literally 6x the price.

5) Product: Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Cream

Description: A concentrated 30 percent hyaluronic acid cream that transforms atmospheric vapor into fresh, pure water, providing your skin with a continuous burst of intense hydration that lasts up to 72 hours.

My Take: I wish I got this during the winter when my skin is the driest. This will probably be too much for my spring / summer skin. It does feel wonderful though.

6) Product: Marc Jacobs Fragrances Daisy

Description: Fragrance Family: Floral. Scent Type: Fruity Florals. Key Notes: Strawberry, Violet Leaves, Jasmine, White Woods.

My Take: I’m not a fan of Daisy or any of its variations. Too powdery floral for me.
