13 of My Favorite Podcast Episodes
Besides fashion and beauty, I am really into podcasts. It’s just something about the energy of my fellow creatives. So when Berry, the mind behind @PodsInColor a directory of black podcasts, asked for submissions for a curated list of favorite podcast episodes, I jumped to it! It was hard narrowing it down to just 13 episodes (not too long ago I did my 9 favorite podcast shows). I only focused on episodes that really stood out to me and impacted my life somehow.
***WARNING*** Not a single one of these episodes are safe for work, church mothers or children. Not one. So don’t at me on twitter about it.
This was the first episode of The Link Up I listened to and I fell in love! This podcast is very raw and real, unlike any other show out there. From this show I’ve actually developed an online (and real life!) friendship with the women behind it.
So if you ask a single about relationships, you gotta ask a married guy right? I love hearing stories about black marriages and black love. Especially ones we’re not used to hearing. This story is one of them.
3 The Link Up (@WeAreTheLinkUp): Scared and Bewildered
NSFW! NSFW! NSFW! The way I was raised, you don’t talk about sex. Let alone sex toys. So this episode kinda shocked me but in a good way. I’d just never hear women openly talk about this subject. But they did so in a way that wasn’t shameful or overly discreet. It was just a conversation like any other.
This is my favorite show and episode ever! I started listening to The Read in 2013 and binged like 30 episodes in a week. I’ve been w weekly listener ever since and have been to two live shoes. About midway through this episode there’s is a listener question about “kissing cousins” but it’s not quite what you think...
Before launching The Friendzone, Assante and Dustin were regular guests on The Read. So when they started their podcast with Hey Fran Hey, people assumed the podcasts where going to be the same. BUT boy were they wrong. The Friendzone definitely has their own lane. While they share a similar audience and could be be seen as competition, all the hosts are friends and they support each other. This episode was so real Fran didn’t even know they were recording for the first few minutes. That’s authenticity.
6 The Friend Zone (@FriendZonePod): The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
This podcast came at a time in my life where I was super stressed, sleep deprived and constantly anxious. The wellness segment talked about ways to track your sleep and a flower called Passionflower (not passion fruit), that natural helps calm anxious and promote sleep. Passionflower comes in a liquid tincture or a tea. I started researching passionflower and other natural ways to relieve stress. I ended up drinking chamomile tea in the morning to deal with my stressful job and a night time tea with a blend of herbs such as passionflower and valerian root. Honestly, truly, both of these things have saved me from many sleepless nights and many panic attacks.
I can’t say I was a big Necole Bitchie fan, but I was shocked when she shut down her site to start XONecole. I wrote for the site in the beginning and I felt something was off. Then she came out with the infamous video about her struggle and her business not doing as well as she hoped and got mercilessly dragged for a while. But I felt for her and can understand leaving something that makes you feel bad. (I quit my first 9-5 early this year) This episode (and honestly all Myleik’s episodes) got me together quick. Seriously, I listen to this episode and planned my entire September content calendar in an hour.
8 Myleik Teele’s (@myleik) Podcast: POP UP PODCAST: A Letter for Late Bloomers & Comparison
I was having a really bad day when I listened to this episode. Crying in my car bad. While Myleik would laugh at me for saying this at 24, I resonated with this episode because I feel like a late bloomer too. But she makes this statement that sometimes peaking late can feel like failure and my mind just exploded. Sometimes I feel like I’m struggling because I’m failing, but maybe I struggling along until my time comes who knows how many years from now.
This episode completely blew my mind because I’ve only ever heard one perspective on drugs. They’re bad and people who use them are mad. Dr. Hart presents a more scientific and nuanced argument about drugs. While I’m not going to run out and shoot up heroin now, it does provide an alternative perspective.
This is another super NSFW episode. I’ve been following Desus and Mero since their early Complex podcast / YouTube show. And they are so wildly inappropriate and I love it! This episode was sponsored by, all of things, Hypnotic and it was extra out there. I relistened to it two or three times and died laughing each time.
I screamed when I found out that Crissle AND Hey Fran Hey we’re going to be hosting this podcast. They are two of my favorite internet personalities / creatives and they’re reviewing one of my new favorite shows! This episode was my favorite because Crissle says something about always looking for the racism in every scene. And that is the classic Crissle I love!
This is another episode that challenged my views on things, particularly marriage and how we define blackness. The ladies in this podcast are late 30s/40s and aren’t an age group I interacted with much. So hearing their perspective on things help me open up my brain to even considering other possibilities exist. A common thread among my favorite episodes.
This was a hard choice because I actually don’t subscribe to this show. But everyone keeps talking about Tax on the interwebs so I decided to take a listen and saw the therapy episode. Its helps explain some of the brasher points of Tax’s personality that rub some people the wrong way, but it also shows why he relates to a different segment of the population. I’m still not a fan of the show but, hopefully, this episode will help other self-proclaimed street dudes, that therapy is okay.
What are some of your favorite podcasts? Who else should I be listening to?
