How to Prep Your Lips for A Matte Smile

How to Prep Your Lips for A Matte Smile

If you took a look at my fall makeup haul, you saw that I have a bit of a thing for liquid lipsticks. I have about ten or so liquid lipsticks in my collection and I am planning on ordering more. Actually, the first red lipstick I consistently wore was a liquid matte lip. So why do I love them so much? They are easy to apply, usually very pigmented, and long-lasting. And I am hardly the only one in this love affair with liquid lipstick. From beauty supply stores to glossy high-end counters, liquid lipsticks are everywhere as the matte lip craze explodes. (Seriously, what were we doing before matte lips ladies?!)

But often with matte liquid lipstick, dry, flaky lips are a problem. Even if you have soft, supple, always kissable lips, matte liquid sticks will have your lips on desert status if you don't prep correctly. So for an even, moisturized smile, take these two steps before applying your matte liquid lippy.

1) Scrub / exfoliate your lips. You can use a fancy sugar scrub (or literally just scrub sugar on your lips), a lip exfoliator or use a very slightly dampened washcloth. Scrub just enough to get rid of dead skin and reveal smooth lips. But not enough to make them raw. This is from personal experience guys! Take it easy.

2) Use a balm / primer. For most matte lips to be comfortable and long lasting, a thin layer of a primer is a must. I use MAC prep and prime, but Colourpop also makes one for $5. But for super dry formulas, like Colourpop's ultra matte liquid lipstick, a balm underneath the primer is a life saver! And not just any balm, its time to break out the Carmex ladies. Don't act like you are too good for it! It instantly moisturizes deep down and when 5 pm hits and your lips aren't cracked and bleeding, you'll be thanking me! But under less drying matte formulas, like the NARS pencils, the balm will make the lipstick look like a satin finish. In this case, blot off the excess balm with a tissue so you don't change the finish.

Now that you know how to prep, here are five of my favorite matte liquid lipsticks.

Colourpop Ultra Matte Lipstick: These are super affordable at $6 each and are super pigmented. Every time I wear the purple shades, I get tons of compliments. (You can check out some of my swatches here)

NYX Soft Matte Creme: Okay. Okay. I own about 6 or so of these lipsticks most of them nudes. They aren't too matte but give off a long-lasting color payoff.

Sephora Lip Stain: I swear by this red. Seriously, no other red will do it for me, not even Ruby Woo. But this a definitely another formula that needs a balm and liner.

Stila All Day Liquid Lipstick: I haven't personally tried this one, but Danielle Gray and Kela Walker have approved of it. And if it's good enough for them, I can give it a try.

Milani Amore Matte Lip Crème: For months, I am have been trying to track down this formula at CVS and Walgreens. And I have not been able to find it. *sad face* Buuuut, it being a permanent part of their line, so I will (eventually) be able to get my hands on it!

Are you loving the matte liquid lippy trend? Which brand / formula is your favorite?
