L'Wren Scott: More Than Just Jagger's Girlfriend
Yesterday as I’m scrolling through my twitter feed, I see that L’Wren Scott is trending. I think to myself, “Oh what is she up to?” Haven’t heard from her since she cancelled her show." Hmmm. Much to my shock and dismay, I find out she has unfortunately passed. An apparent suicide. What I found peculiar about the reporting about her death was, more often than not, mainstream ( read non-fashion) publications were referring to her simply as Mick Jagger’s girlfriend. As if she was a trophy girlfriend, merely living on the fame of her rocker boyfriend. I think a successful model turned stylist turned designer, who dressed the likes of Nicole Kidman and first lady Michelle Obama, deserves to be known in her own right, for her own work.
Naturally a tall girl, Scott (born Laura Bambrough) struggled to find clothes for her figure as young as 13. Her entrance into the fashion world began humbly, repurposing thrift store clothes to fit her physique. Scott was discovered in her home state of Utah at age 18 and was whisked away to Paris where she modeled for Chanel and Thierry Mugler. She went on to be featured on the hallowed pages of French and Italian Vogue. From there she transitions to PR and then onto styling private clients, magazine covers and even the Oscars. In 2006, frustrated by failing to find her perfect little black dress, she debuted her first fashion line, rightfully named Little Black Dress. With clients like Nicole Kidman and Sarah Jessica Parker, her line was carried in high-end stores like Barney’s. To add to her mass appeal, she had collaborations with CoutureLab, Lancome and Banana Republic. While her time was cut short and her high end line seemed to be struggling, L’Wren Scott should be remembered for her work in the fashion industry, not just for dating Mick Jagger.
